The Canada Job Grant is a way for employers and governments to support training that leads directly to available jobs or increases workers' ability to retain jobs. Employers know what training is required for the jobs they need to fill. Through the program, employers participate in the training decisions that will equip their current and future workers with the skills they need to fill available jobs.
To be eligible for the grant there are a few conditions that must be met: the employer and employee(s), training provider and training program must all meet eligibility criteria outlined by the grant. Please visit the Canada Job Grant website for the details. In addition to determining eligibility the process can be summarized to the following:
- Identify employee training needs
- Select a training provider
- Submit application
- Pay for training now or after grant approval
- Receive decision and reference #
- Begin training
- Submit reimbursement form and all training receipts
- Receive partial reimbursement
- Employee gets training credential
- Submit completion form
- Receive remainder of reimbursement

Second Career (Employment Ontario Programs)
The Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) administers programs, such as Employment Ontario. to assist individuals who are unemployed or who have qualified for Employment Insurance. Students may qualify for post secondary education financing through Employment Ontario or other programs manged by MTCU.
One of the programs that are available is the Second Career program. Those who have been laid off may be eligible for this funding.
What is Second Career?
Second Career provides laid-off workers with skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario.
Second Career is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need, so you may be asked to contribute what you can to your training or education.
Second Career provides up to $28,000 for tuition, books, and other instruction costs such as manuals or workbooks. It may also include transportation, and basic living allowance.
Additional support may be available to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, dependent care, cost of living away from home and academic upgrading.
